Now way back in 1940, Bob Hope made an observation about election fraud. Though I don’t think he realized to the extent he might be correct because he might of have a few more adult beverages had he known how pervasive the problem would become. Now you see, according to Pew, 1 in 8 voter registrations is inaccurate and 51 million citizens are unregistered. http://www.pewcenteronthestates.org/news_room_detail.aspx?id=85899370596
The ground-breaking examination of the nation’s voter rolls, commissioned by Pew and undertaken by RTI International, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research institute, also finds that:
• At least 51 million eligible citizens remain unregistered—more than 24 percent of the eligible population.
• Nearly 2 million deceased individuals are listed as active voters.
• Approximately 2.75 million people have active registrations in more than one state.
• About 12 million records have incorrect addresses, meaning either the voters moved, or errors in the information make it unlikely any mailings can reach them.
Now not only has the fundamental right to vote in this Country in serious jeopardy but the very core premise that our Nation’s elections are free and accurate is in serious question. The processes and systems used to register and maintain voter registrations must be updated. This is a national imperative. Voting is probably the only thing that most citizens do to participate in the governmental process. If this basic entryway to our democratic process is perceived to be unreliable and inaccurate, citizens will become even more jaded and refuse to participate and exercise the most fundamental of acts known to our Nation’s citizenry. It’s bad enough that voter turnout is in steady decline but if the perception that the process is flawed and unfair, voter will feel why should they bother to vote. If this trend continues, then we as a nation will never have true representative leadership in our Nation’s elected positions.
But as bad as that may be the truly distressing finding from the Pew study is that nearly 2 million DEAD people are listed as active voters! Now I know you have seen them out there. And I know you have seen them at polling places normally polling places in General Elections. It could be that most times General Elections are held in the cooler month of November and the walking dead like the cooler weather (must be easier on the hair). But something must be done to keep the walking dead from voting. Now don’t think this is a new problem in 1940 Bob Hope identified this issue and the problem has been growing ever since . Oh how we should have paid attention to Bob back then.
