“Talks with North Korea have not worked….we’ve kicked the can down the road long enough…enough is enough.”
– U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley
At noon (NKT) on Sunday, September 3rd, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude-6.3 seismic event in the northwestern quadrant of North Korea…an event so powerful that it was reported to have rattled buildings in both China and Russia…an event that both South Korean and Japanese officials said was suspected to be the result of an underground atomic explosion…an ‘artificial earthquake’ as the South Korean military called it.
And this now confirmed explosion was indeed a nuclear test…a nuclear test whose yield was several times larger than the previous test last September which yielded a seismic reading akin to a 5.3 magnitude earthquake…a successful nuclear test officially announced by North Korea’s state news agency KCNA…a test ordered by Kim Jong-un himself…and the sixth nuclear test that we know of within this particular region. But more importantly is that North Korea is claiming that this test was no mere atomic test but was a test of a more sophisticated and more powerful hydrogen bomb…a two-stage thermonuclear weapon specifically designed to be placed atop their newly developed long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).
Translation: the time for talk is now over folks…the time for actions has arrived not just because a hydrogen bomb produces a five-times more powerful blast than even the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but because Kim Jong-un claims his missiles can now reach our allies and even more importantly… can now reach almost anywhere in the U.S. mainland.
And while President Trump initially tweeted that “the United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea”…meaning China…which would allow a dangerous situation to become even more so as China has long been North Korea’s patron and ally but who at the same time is a country whose exports to the U.S. alone make up a full one third of its total exports… something they cannot economically afford to lose…it is the “other options” that are of prime importance to us because we all know that except in certain circumstances sanctions…which is really what stopping trade is…simply do not work. And sanctions especially do not work against North Korea as sanctions to cut then off from the global economy have been in place for decades and have accomplished nothing in regards to first putting a stop to the rogue nation’s nuclear ambitions and now to their existing nuclear capabilities.
Remember, time has shown that when dealing with Kim Jong-un…a mad man-child hell-bent on not just unifying the two Korea’s under his rule but hell-bent on ruling the world…or it least making sure that both he and North Korea are taken seriously as a key nuclear power on the world stage…any and all sanctions that have been placed on North Korea actually have spurred him on into becoming even more belligerent and hostile with each passing day.
And with the world’s condemnation pouring in…including from U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who said that North Korea’s newest action is “profoundly destabilizing for regional security,” and with the U.N. Security Council holding an emergency meeting yesterday…an emergency meeting called at the request of the U.S., Japan, South Korea, France, and Great Britain…it can be seen that while some voices do realize and understand the tangible threat we and the world face, other voices clearly do not no matter that logic dictates that any nation doing business with North Korea is actually giving aid to help strengthen their nuclear capabilities.
And while some do understand the danger posed, they still at the same time do nothing of substance to rein in the rogue nation. And these folks happen to include NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg who said he “strongly condemned” the nuclear test…words that Kim Jong-un most assuredly is laughing at…while Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, called this newest test “an extremely regrettable act” and that it was in “complete disregard of the repeated demands of the international community.”
Strong talk but we all know that talk without actions is but empty words spoken.
And sadly, while Great Britain’s Theresa May outwardly condemned this newest test as being “reckless,” she still said that it is “more pressing than ever to look at increasing the pace of implementing sanctions on the regime”…refusing to understand that North Korea has grown even stronger militarily while already being under harsh decades long sanctions. And Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull echoed May’s sentiments believing that China should be the one to pressure the North Koreans to come to the negotiating table, saying that while China is frustrated by North Korea’s conduct, they still have the greatest leverage and that with the greatest leverage comes the greatest responsibility. And they too are so forgetting that the mad man-child who rules North Korea has an itchy trigger finger ready to push the nuclear button at the time of his choosing.
And as expected China…who has so much to lose if indeed we stop trading with them…has of course now chimed in condemning this newest test in a statement posted on their official foreign ministry website. Saying, “China will work with the international community to comprehensively and completely implement the relevant resolutions of U.N. Security Council, firmly push forward the denuclearization of the peninsula, and maintain the peace and stability of the peninsula,” even these strong words have China doing little of real substance to call off their ever misbehaving stepchild.
So what of our allies South Korea and Japan…the two nations most easily reached by North Korean missiles…Japan’s Foreign Minister Taro Kono said that “by way of the embassy in Beijing, we made it clear in the strongest words, that if this was a nuclear test, this is unforgivable, and a violation of the U.N. Security Council resolution.”…like this means anything to China let alone to North Korea.
And South Korea’s President Moon Jae asked both his country’s foreign and defense ministries to “to seek all diplomatic ways to make North Korea abandon its nuclear and missile development through complete, verifiable and irrevocable ways,” forgetting that South Korea’s own appeasement of the mad man-child has contributed to Kim Jong-un seeing diplomacy as person non-grata if you will. However, Moon Jae did add that “our military must thoroughly prepare aggressive response” adding that South Korea’s government will never allow North Korea to make further advancement in the nuclear and missile development.
But no matter others words said it was former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton who said it best when he put the entire scenario into perspective with one simple but very powerful sentence,“How do you feel about dead Americans?”…for just like with the actions of radical islamic terrorists Bolton knows well that it is either them or us…and obviously better it be them than us.
So much better them than us…and better for both the stability and safety of all the world’s nations in fact, for it must be known that this latest test was not some of Kim Jong-un’s past empty or baiting threats for within hours of the test being confirmed a senior U.S. official stated that “our experts” were reviewing the data but that “we are highly confident this was a test of an advanced nuclear device and what we’ve seen so far is not inconsistent with North Korea’s claims.”
Remember those past claims…claims that have proven to be truth…remember that this past July, North Korea conducted two intercontinental ballistic missile tests, which experts said indicated the missiles could indeed reach parts of the U.S. mainland. And just last month, the United Nations placed additional sanctions on North Korea… sanctions that included a ban on coal and other needed exports totaling over one billion dollars…sanctions put in place because of the July ICBM tests.
“Because we are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea, but I said we have many options to do.” – Secretary of Defense Gen. James Mattis
So where do we go from here, especially when just yesterday North Korea announced that they will soon be testing an ICBM that not only will capable of reaching the continental U.S. but will also be capable of carrying a hydrogen bomb. Simply, we go to war and end this decades long madness once and for all.
We go to war courtesy of a so-rightful preemptive strike to protect not only our own homeland but to protect our trusted allies as well. A preemptive strike to protect against “any threat to any U.S. territory or our allies”…a preemptive strike that “will be met with a massive military response that will be overwhelming,” so said Gen Mattis after Sunday’s White House meeting with President Trump…a ‘red line’ now being set up that North Korea would be oh-so foolish to cross.
And that sentiment was strongly echoed at yesterday’s emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council when Ambassador Nikki Haley told the U.N. that their usual “incremental approach” in getting North Korea to stop its nuclear capabilities has failed and that North Korea has slapped every security council member in the face with their actions. Saying that, “North Korea is begging for war…the stakes could not be higher…war is not something the U.S. wants…but our country’s patience is not unlimited,” Haley added that, “when a rogue nation points an ICBM at you, you don’t take steps to lower your guard.” This surely puts the world on notice as to where this is going for even while she called for the strongest sanctions to be placed on the rogue nation, Haley made it clear to the Security Council that “enough is enough”…mixed messages are no longer being sent…the time for action…military action…is very close at hand.
See Ambassador Nikki Haley’s remarks in full here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qm97oRWdZE
Very close at hand no matter that China’s ambassador to the U.N., Liu Jieyi, immediately countered Haley’s words with words to the affect that “China will never allow chaos and war” on the Korean peninsular as he urged for even more, up to this point useless, dialogue. Remember, it would be China who gets millions of refugees fleeing into their country if war does indeed break out…millions of refugees taxing China’s economy to a virtual breaking point…millions of refugees they do not want.
So what happens now that what was once a stalemate has truly come to a head…will China finally take definitive actions to rein in North Korea knowing it would serve their own best interests well to do so…or will we indeed have to go to war…to preemptively strike a country whose people are already suffering under a brutal regime. I believe the answer will be forthcoming within the next few days, but no matter which way this current situation plays out know that if we do not put an end to Kim Jong-un and his threats now the same situation will come back to haunt us again, and next time it might be to late to stop the mad man-child from sending a little nuclear package our way.
